Good Morning KYC. After spenind 120 mile sailing ENE to avoid a Tropical Depression we are back on course and heading directly for Shiono Misaki. This is the good news.

Now I wish to report that at sunset last night an Albatross which has been following us for two days tried to kiss our Raymarine Anemometer. He is obviously in love with our Raymarine. At Sunrise today he is back! This love is I guess normally O.K. But during a nasty squall we lost our windex and so really need to keep our Anemometer. Without it we would be back to sailing by the feel of the wind on our face.

We have tried to explain this to this bird using load voices and strong words but he continues to stalk the top of our mast. I am jealous, I really wish I could use the wind as well as he does. He matches his soaring speed perfectly with the boat, calculates the pitch and yaw and gives the anemometer a kiss. Of course it is possible he is trying to eat it!

Io JIma is in view off our Starboard Beam.

Although British by Birth and Passport I served three years as a regular Soldier in the Royal Australian Army Artillery. Today I am today a permanent Resident of Japan with a wonderful Japanese wife and daughter.

As Roschana quietly pays her sunrise respects to those of Io Jima and I have no words to write today. Just my own silent prayer.

『Roschana もうじきGUAMに到着』7/7

RoschanaがもうじきGUAMに到着するようです。もう到着しているかもしれません?

Good Morning,

Well with only 40 miles to go to Guam nature decided to be kind to the people who live in Guam.

This morning, nature sent three huge rain squalls one by one to wash Roschana and of course the two smelly sailors inside.

The squalls were unusual for us because they had no big wind just a huge amount of rain. So we got out the soap and both Ben and I had a wonderful shower up on deck.

The people of Guam will be happy to know that both Ben and Mark now smell very nice.

Yoroshiku.

『Roschana 順調に航海』7/4

様々な状況に遭遇しながらも順調に航海を続けているようです。

Good Morning KYC. Thank you for watching our progress on SPOT.

Well we have had very interesting winds almost all the way. The most obvious wind pattern we have found is the tropical "Squall"

The squall is a very intense and usually short term wind pattern. It comes into the boat very quickly, increases winds from maybe 5 knots to 35 knots in just one minute. It hammers the boat for usually about 10 minutes but sometimes will last 30 minutes.

The first squall we experienced scared me quite a lot. I said to that squall "Wow, you are very intense but more, you are just "Out of Control" nasty little devil trying to break my boat".

AS we moved North we had less and less real wind. Daily Grib files show zero or maybe 5 knots true everywhere from Solomons all the way to Guam. The entire west pacific went to sleep. All we had were times of a) No wind B) Squalls. So I said to the squalls, "O.K. I am sorry, I shouldn't call you nasty devil, can we please be friends"

The squalls taught me how to manage the boat while the squalls are punching.

First need to choose correct sail set. WE used 3rd Reef on Main sail and Storm Jib. Then listen to Squall "No, No, No Mark not like that too deep, lift it up a little higher, not too high.... gently, gently....Good.....OK you got it, now Go Fast Boy be safe and have fun"

We have been working with the squalls since about 13 degrees south. One by one they have pushed us North and without them we would surely still be South of the Solomon Islands.

So, it's true, even your enemy can become your friend.

Hi There KYC,

Well we are going OK. Have had a real mix of wind since leaving Southport.
First night NE 25 - 30. Heavy work, pounding all night. Broke the toilet off the stand! OOPS!

Yesterday lovely SE 15 knots all day.

Tonight wind is very messy. Swinging everywhere no strength at all.

Getting warmer inside the boat. Also water temperature up. In Adelaide it was 18 degrees C. Here it is 24 degrees C.

Maybe Spot is working again.

HI there KYC

We came into Southport to change crew. Weather became bad so can not exit Harbour until the low system moves away. Last 4 days wind gusting 50 to 60 knots. 6 Meter seas breaking on Harbour entrance.

Hope to leave tomorrow Thursday or maybe Friday.

SPOT web site made changes to their home page and now only keep 7 days data.

Also there is a good service to track AIS transponders.

Hello KYC,

Well we arrived at Southport Queensland.

Arrived 3:00 a.m. June 6th (Sydney Time) 27.54S
153.20

Sorry but looks like the SPOT company did not support so well.

The boat went very well from Portland to Southport. 1050 NM. WE covered the voyage in 8 days 15 hours. Total of 207 hours So average speed abut 5knots.

We had very little following wind but when we did get following wind it was GREAT FUN. But really we had to work on the wind most of the way. I learned a lot about the different sail configurations available on the boat as we worked with winds ranging from 3 knots to 35 knots.

Safety was in the front of our minds full time as we looked after each other. We always wore full harness and tethers on deck. We hooked onto the Jack lines before leaving the cabin. We both carried PLB unis at all times on deck. We practiced using the life raft and how to quickly find Grab bag, Flares and Horns. All lifejackets are fitted with water activated strobe lights and dye marker set. During the day we wore inflatable 150N life jackets. At night we wore solid life jackets with crotch straps.

Moral on the boat was fantastic all the way.

WE saw so, so much wildlife. The natural beauty was incredible. Uncountable dolphins, whales, turtles and birds. STrange but not even one shark.

Tom and I sailed double handed all the way and shared 2 hour shifts.

Yoroshiku.

『Roschana

May 31st 11:00 am.
37.42S
149.52E

We have been running away from a high pressure system moving East from Perth. So far we have been lucky and kept 10 - 15 knots following winds most of the way. The yacht is happy and the crew, Tom and Mark are more happy.

Gabo Island is only 12 NM away. Gabo is famous for the Sydney to Hobart sailors because that is where they feel they enter Tasman Sea haeding for Bass Straight. For us we enter the Pacific and go North!

HF Radio friend tells us they are catching "Abalone" and "Tuna" at Bermagui So we may stop there for dinner!
